Fitness activities entwined with gamification

Sphery, a Spin-off  of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) is revolutionizing the fitness sector with game technology. The startup has now completed a seed financing round and is progressing towards opening the first location in Zurich.

Sphery specializes in game-based, personalized and multimedia training concepts and technologies, which are combined with innovative and unique hardware and software designs. With a research-based and a participatory development approach, Sphery contributes to the physical and mental health of today’s «digital native» society.

With Sphery ExcerCube, participants train in cubes allowing them to immerse themselves in new worlds – as members of an international community, in which they may play alone and with or against their peers from all over the world. The video gives an insight in the new fitness concept.

The concept was presented for the first time at FIBO, the world's largest fitness fair in Cologne in April, in front of 400 CEO's and was met with great interest. Thanks to its innovativeness, the startup led by the Sport Scientist and CEO Anna Lisa Martin-Niedecken, has attracted investors resulting in the closing of its seed financing round. The funds will be used for the next steps as it prepares to open the first pop-up locations in Zurich and a flagship store next year.

In parallel, research cooperations with various universities are being established. Martin-Niedecken, developed the scientific basis for the technology at the Institute for Design Research at the ZHdK, in the subject area Game Design which will further callaborate the spin-off. Shery is also participating in the Z-Kubator Development Programme of the ZHdK and will showcase its innovation at the second Swiss Digital Day on October 25, 2018.
